The Moanin’ Frogs, Six Saxophones From Soprano To Bass

Bending genres and uplifting spirits, The Moanin’ Frogs offer an electrifying approach to chamber music. Conservatory trained and entertainment minded, their dynamic and technically precise performances of classical, ragtime, jazz, and pop delight fans across the world.

Featuring all six saxophones from soprano to bass, The Moanin’ Frogs are unique on today’s chamber music landscape. First Prize Winners of the 2018 M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition, their passion, quality, variety, instrumentation, and focus on the audience experience set them apart. Comfortable in a wide array of venues, The Moanin’ Frogs deliver artist-level performances to small towns and major performance halls alike, performing chamber concerts, concertos, and educational programs throughout the US and abroad. The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; Detroit Public Television; The Gong Show on ABC; Strasbourg, France; and rural Arkansas are a few such venues. Their debut recording was released on Teal Creek Music in 2017.

Online and in person, The Moanin’ Frogs inspire future generations through popular music videos, interactive clinics, masterclasses, and a yearly summer institute for students of all ages. The Moanin’ Frogs are performing artists for D’Addario Woodwinds and the Conn-Selmer Division of Education.

Lucas Hopkins, saxophone

Lucas Hopkins is bursting onto the American musical landscape as a soloist, orchestra player and chamber musician. Frequent performer with the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas (Miami Beach, FL) and Cabrillo Festival Orchestra under Marin Alsop (Santa Cruz, CA), Lucas delivered a "stunning performance" of Alexander Glazunov's Concerto in Eb with the Oakland East Bay Symphony in his concerto debut as winner of that orchestra's concerto competition (Benicia Herald). First prize winner of of the Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition, Lucas also won the North Shore Musician's Club Solo Competition and took second place at the North American Saxophone Alliance quartet competition. Lucas became an immediate YouTube sensation when he performed Piet Swerts' notoriously difficult saxophone work, Klonos, while riding a unicycle. As a jazz musician, Lucas performs extensively throughout California and the Midwest. His teachers include Timothy McAllister, Andrew Bishop, and Eugene Rousseau at the University of Michigan (Specialist), Northwestern University (MM), and the University of Minnesota (BM). Andy Hall, saxophone

Andy Hall is earning recognition as one of his generation's leading saxophonists. As founder of the sensational new music ensemble, Latitude 49, Andy has held residencies at University of Illinois–Chicago, University of Western Kentucky, Elmhurst College, Concordia University, University of Toledo, and Avaloch Farm Music Institute, and collaborates with such leading composers as Marc Mellits, Roshanne Etezady, Virgil Moorefield, Reinaldo Moya, and Gabriela Smith, to name a few. Winning first place at national NFMC Biennial Competition and second in both the North Carolina Symphony Concerto Competition and North American Saxophone Alliance Quartet Competition, Andy has also performed as concerto soloist with the University of Michigan Symphony Band, University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra, Interlochen's World Youth Orchestra, Triangle Wind Ensemble, and was a featured artist on National Public Radio’s “From the Top”.

Holding an MM from the University of Michigan and a BM from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in saxophone performance, Andy’s principal teachers and mentors include world renowned saxophonists Donald Sinta, Dr. Steven Stusek, Dr. Timothy McAllister, Chad Eby, and Dr. Susan Fancher. He is a proud member of the North American Saxophone Alliance and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and was awarded a Presser Scholarship in 2009.

Jonathan Hostottle, saxophone

Jonathan Hostottle is one of the most gifted, dynamic and intriguing classical saxophonists performing today. His extraordinary performance of the Prokofiev Flute Sonata, Ryo Noda's Mai, Lennon's Distances Within Me, Bach Adagio from his Violin Sonata in G minor and Paganini's Caprice No. 5earned him the position of National Finalist in the in the prestigious Music Teachers National Association Young Artists Competition in 2016. He is much a collaborator as soloist, premiering works by Clay Gonzalez and Karl Ronneburg; he has upcoming premieres scheduled by Matthew Levy, Baldwin Gigang, and Matthew Browne. His collaborations with vocalists, participation in the budding Reed Quintet movement, and performance scholarship in jazz and early music improvisation position him to buttress, expand and redefine what it means to be a classical saxophonist.

Hailing from Corning, NY, Jonathan Hostottle joined The Moanin' Frogs in 2015 at the age of 20. Jonathan's teachers include Timothy McAllister, Donald Sinta, Dr. Joseph Murphy, and Joseph Gascho.

Jonathan Hulting-Cohen, saxophone

Jonathan Hulting-Cohen's refined and compelling saxophone playing has been heard worldwide. "Impressive" with "exceptional facility" (Schenectady Daily Gazette), his concerto performances have led to collaborations with the Philadelphia Classical Symphony, the Tulare County Symphony Orchestra, Ann Arbor Concert Band, and The Valley Winds, as well as the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Band, Concert Band, and Chamber Choir. He has additionally given recitals at Colburn’s Thayer Hall, George Mason University, and at SaxOpen in Strasbourg, France. Winner of the University of Michigan Concerto Competition, finalist in the Astral Artists National Auditions, and second place in the North American Saxophone Alliance Quartet Competition, Jonathan was also invited to participate in a competitive performance residency at Carnegie Hall (Zankel), hosted by John Adams and David Robertson. Co-founder of the Admiral Launch Duo with harpist Jennifer R. Ellis, he has commissioned eight pieces for saxophone, recorded an upcoming NAXOS release, toured the east and west coasts, performed at the inaugural Northwestern University New Music Conference, and held two residencies at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute. He also led an interdisciplinary performance project, Silence, combining dance, music, visual art, and performance technology, which culminated in a film premiered at the 17th World Saxophone Congress.

Jonathan is Assistant Professor of Saxophone at University of Massachusetts Amherst. He has given master classes at Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, Youngstown State University, and Schenectady County Community College. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees under Donald Sinta at University of Michigan, and completed additional studies at the Université Européenne de Saxophone in Gap, France; Fundación Ortega y Gasset in Toledo, Spain; and Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement in Mysore, India. Jonathan is a Conn-Selmer Artist and performs on Selmer (Paris) saxophones

Sean Hurlburt, saxophone

Sean Hurlburt is an exquisite concert soloist and consummate chamber musician. As a soloist, Sean has played concerti with the Northwestern Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Roosevelt University Wind Ensemble, Northwestern Chamber Orchestra, Northwestern Movie Music Ensemble, and Simpson University Symphony Orchestra. His performances of Ingolf Dahl’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Jacques Ibert’s Concertino da Camera have aired on Chicago’s WFMT and Public Radio International, respectively. As co-founder of the Amethyst Quartet, Sean won first prizes at the Fischoff, Coleman, and MTNA chamber music competitions and continually works to promote and legitimize saxophone quartet in the chamber music world. Leaving his faculty position at Roosevelt University to raise his family in Ann Arbor, MI, Sean now freelances and maintains a private saxophone studio. He earned his bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees in saxophone performance at Northwestern University under the tutelage of Dr. Frederick L. Hemke.

Edward Goodman, saxophone

Saxophonist Edward Goodman's versatility is matched only by his finesse, sheer virtuosity, and dare-devil courage to approach classical music's most challenging repertoire. In 2015, Edward became one of only a handfull of saxophonists in the world to perform Pierre Boulez' Dialogue de l'ombre double, stunning his live and internet audiences with his technical prowess and jaw-droppingly sensitive interpretation. He has performed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under Leonard Slatkin, Ann Arbor Symphony under Arie Lipsky (MI), the Music Academy of the West Orchestra under Larry Rachleff (Santa Barbara, CA), and Milton Babbit's All Set with the New World Symphony under Jeffrey Milarsky (Miami Beach, FL), Edward also won first prize at the North American Saxophone Alliance Solo Competition and concerto competitions at both the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. Edward is equally at home in jazz as a composer and improviser, performing in chamber jazz settings and with Phil Ogilvie's Rhythm Kings, an "early jazz" big band based in Ann Arbor, MI. He presented his scholarship on "The Saxophone Craze" – the period from 1910-1930 that inspired his founding of The Moanin' Frogs – at the University of Michigan.

Edward was recently appointed as the Assistant Professor of Saxophone at The University of Arizona, Fred Fox School of Music. Edward earned master's degrees in saxophone performance and improvisation at the University of Michigan, Bacherlor of Music and Music Education degrees from Michigan State University, and will earn his DMA from the University of Michigan in 2016. His teachers have included Timothy McAllister, Donald Sinta, Andrew Bishop, and Joseph Lulloff.
