Apollo Chamber Players

The Apollo Chamber Players is a non-profit chamber music organization that explores the intersection of classical and folk music and provides exciting, innovative and culturally enriching programs to a wide audience. While illuminating the unique folk sounds and styles imbued in classical composers’ works, Apollo discovers and recreates lost, rarely heard, and culturally significant folk music through well-crafted arrangements and commissions for chamber ensembles.

Fredericksburg Music Club, Inc. Presents Apollo Chamber Players In Concert March 15, 2015

Through The Apollo Chamber Players' mission, we see a unique opportunity to challenge the traditional notions of classical chamber music and audience engagement by highlighting the deep connections between classical and folk music. Our mission affords a unique opportunity to foster cultural awareness and education, and to grow and expand an audience of chamber music lovers. To accomplish our mission, we concentrate on four specific areas:

Apollo presents season concerts at notable concert venues in the Houston area, including Duncan Recital Hall at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music; The Hobby Center's Zilkha Hall; and the Parish Hall of Christ the King Lutheran Church. With an emphasis on thematic programming, our concerts seek to enlighten as well as to entertain, as the richness and natural accessibility of folk/cultural music provides an engaging gateway to classical music of all stripes. While performing and incorporating native composers’ folk-inspired works, we provide further cultural context by presenting arrangements/transcriptions of folk melodies and songs from the various cultures showcased. Examples of Apollo-arranged folk melodies include tangos from Venezuela, flamenco and Basque folk music from Spain and France, rare Greek Rebetika folk melodies, and traditional German folk songs. Apollo's upcoming 2013/14 season explores the visceral folk sounds of the Slavic region and the spirited, alluring folkloric music of Scandinavia and the British Isles.

Apollo Chamber Players

Biography

The Apollo Chamber Players is committed to providing educational concerts, masterclasses, and programs to schools and institutions in the Houston area and beyond. As members of Young Audiences of Houston, a non-profit arts-in-education provider reaching 330,000 students, Apollo presents folk-themed educational programs at schools and student music festivals in Houston and Texas at large. Our vision incorporates Apollo’s culturally-inspired mission into the fabric of our educational presentations.

Apollo extends its outreach in the community by presenting as many concerts to the public as possible in diverse settings and contexts. Further community outreach is accomplished by the mediums of radio and internet, as our segments on Houston Public Radio’s (91.7 FM KUHA) The Front Row performing arts program reach a listening audience of over 400,000; countless more are engaged via the station’s website.

Either alone or in collaboration with other music/arts organizations, Apollo pursues opportunities to present concerts outside the greater Houston area. We look forward to our Carnegie Hall debut on Friday, October 11th as part of a 2013 East Coast Tour.

The Apollo Chamber Players, currently in its fourth full concert season, has been a dynamic member of the Houston arts community since its founding in 2008. The organization attained non-profit status in early 2009, and since that time Apollo has grown and implemented its mission through season concerts, community outreach, and educational programs in the Greater Houston area. Thanks to the enthusiastic and generous support of the diverse Houston community, Apollo has enjoyed much growth over the past five years. In coming seasons, Apollo will continue to pursue its goal of illuminating the folk traditions of world cultures through the medium of chamber music.
